What is an AI restaurant reservation call?

Quick answer

  • An AI restaurant reservation call is your own AI phoning a restaurant for you: it asks about a table for your party and time, requests it, and texts you what the restaurant said.
  • It works like you making the call yourself, just without you on the phone.

Who it's for

  • Diners who'd rather not call around for a table, like planning a birthday dinner or finding somewhere open tonight.
  • It uses the AI you already have; there's no new app to learn.

What it isn't

  • It isn't reservation software for restaurants and it doesn't take bookings for a business.
  • It isn't a promise of a table. Your AI asks; the restaurant decides.

How to set up your AI to call restaurants in 3 steps

Step 1: subscribe to the Agent Phone Plan

Subscribe to the Agent Phone Plan: $14.99 for the first month, then $29.99/month. Your card is charged when you approve. Your AI gets its own dedicated US local phone number to make and receive calls and send and receive texts.

Step 2: connect the AI you already use

Connect the plan to your AI app. ChatGPT adds Bland's MCP URL as a connector with Bland sign-in; Claude Desktop, Claude Code, Codex, Cursor, VS Code, Windsurf, and Gemini CLI use Bland's MCP server; Grok Bot and Meta Muse have their own setup routes. Keep tool-approval prompts on, so your AI asks before it places a call or sends a text.

Step 3: run a safe test call to your own phone

Ask your AI to call your own phone first and practice asking for a table, so you hear how it sounds before it calls a restaurant. Next, ask your AI to call a restaurant and ask about a table for 2 this weekend, then see how the reply text looks.

What your AI can do for your next meal out

Ask about a table tonight

  • Your AI calls a restaurant and asks if they have a table for 2 at 7pm, and requests it if they do.
  • If they're full, it asks about the nearest open time and texts you the options.

Plan a group dinner

  • For a party of 8, your AI asks whether the restaurant can seat a larger group and what they need from you.
  • It texts you any details they mention, like a set menu or a time limit on the table.

Move or cancel a table

  • Running late? Your AI calls to ask if your table can move to a later time.
  • Plans changed? It calls to cancel and texts you once the restaurant has the message.

Check hours and details

  • Your AI checks opening hours, whether they take phone requests, or if there's outdoor seating.
  • It can also ask about dietary options before you go.

How an AI restaurant reservation request works

1. You set the details

Tell your AI the restaurant, date, time, party size, and the name the table should go under. Add a flex window, like "anytime from 6:30 to 8", so your AI knows what it can ask for.

2. Your AI calls and asks

Your AI calls from its own number, says it's calling for you, and asks about a table that matches your details. If one's open, it requests it under your name.

3. If your time isn't open

Your AI asks what they do have and only requests a time inside your window. Anything outside your window, it texts you first and waits for your answer.

4. You get a text with their answer

Your AI texts you what the restaurant said: the time, the name it's under, and any notes. If the restaurant calls or texts back later, your AI can pick up or reply, and pass it on to you.

What to tell your AI before it calls

The restaurant and time

  • Name the restaurant (or its number), the date, and your ideal time.
  • Calls go to US and Canada numbers only.

Your party and name

  • Give your party size and the name the table should go under.
  • Mention anything the restaurant should know, like a high chair or a birthday.

Your flex window and limits

  • Say how flexible you are on time, and whether a bar seat or patio table is OK.
  • Tell your AI what it must not share, like payment details.

Your permission

  • Keep tool-approval prompts on, so your AI checks with you before it calls.
  • Example: "Call this restaurant and ask for a table for 4 on Friday between 7 and 8. Text me before agreeing to anything else."

What you get back and what your AI won't do

Your reply text

  • A short text with what the restaurant said: whether they're holding a table, the time, the name, and any notes like a deposit or time limit.
  • If nobody answered, your AI tells you so you can decide what's next.

What your AI won't do

  • It won't pay a deposit, share card details, or agree to a time outside your window without asking you.
  • It can't promise a table. The restaurant always decides.

When you might step in

  • Some restaurants only take requests online or seat walk-ins only. Your AI texts you what they said.
  • If they need a card to hold the table, your AI lets you know so you can handle it yourself.

Works with the AI you already use

ChatGPT and Grok Bot

  • ChatGPT: add Bland's MCP URL (https://api.bland.ai/v1/mcp) as a connector, then sign in with Bland when ChatGPT opens it.
  • Grok Bot: use the wallet-assisted setup, or the manual MCP route.

Claude Desktop, Claude Code, and Codex

  • Claude Desktop and Claude Code: add Bland's MCP server (https://api.bland.ai/v1/mcp) with a Bland API key in an Authorization: Bearer header, or with Bland sign-in.
  • Codex: add Bland's MCP server in ~/.codex/config.toml (URL https://api.bland.ai/v1/mcp), with the API key read from the BLAND_API_KEY environment variable. Bland sign-in isn't available for Codex yet. Sign in with Bland will apply once dynamic client registration is available. Until then, Codex uses an API key.

Cursor, VS Code, Windsurf, Gemini CLI, and Meta Muse

  • Cursor, VS Code, Windsurf, and Gemini CLI: add Bland's MCP server URL plus your API key header. Each app has its own config spot. Your API key is in your Bland dashboard settings.
  • Meta Muse: connects through Bland's REST API with a secure credential flow, not MCP.

Keep approvals on

  • Calls and texts have real-world effects, so keep tool-approval prompts on in whichever app you use.
  • Bland isn't affiliated with these companies; it connects through each app's supported tools.

Questions

What's the difference between the Agent Phone Plan and trying it for free?

The Agent Phone Plan gives your AI its own dedicated US local number to make and receive calls and send and receive texts, for $14.99 for the first month, then $29.99/month. You can try it for free. That try covers outbound calls only, from a shared Bland number: no dedicated number, no texting, no incoming calls.

Will the restaurant hold a table for me?

That's always the restaurant's call. Your AI asks about availability and requests the table, then texts you exactly what the restaurant said, including whether they're holding it.

Is this reservation software for my restaurant?

No. This is for diners. Your own AI calls a restaurant for you, the same way you'd call yourself.

Will my AI pay a deposit or give card details?

No. If the restaurant asks for a deposit or a card to hold the table, your AI texts you so you can handle it yourself.

Can the restaurant call my AI back?

Yes. Your AI has its own number, so the restaurant can call or text it back. If your AI is already on a call, a new incoming call hears a busy signal, since the plan handles 1 call at a time.

Where can my AI call?

Restaurants with US and Canada phone numbers only.

Which AI apps work with the Agent Phone Plan?

ChatGPT, Claude Desktop, Claude Code, Codex, Cursor, VS Code, Windsurf, Gemini CLI, Grok Bot, and Meta Muse. Most connect through Bland's MCP server; Meta Muse uses Bland's REST API.

What does it cost after the first month?

$29.99/month. The first month is $14.99 on your account's first plan, and your card is charged when you approve.
